LIBBY HOLMAN, ACTRESS OR MURDERESS?

Elizabeth Lloyd Holzman was born May 3, 1904, in Cincinnati to parents Alfred and Rachel Holzman. Early in her life, her wealthy family became destitute after Holman’s uncle, Ross Holzman, embezzled nearly $1 million of the family’s stock brokerage business. Alfred then altered the family name to Holman, presumably to hide their Jewish identity and to avoid the scandal.

Elizabeth began her career starring in University of Cincinnati musical productions, but she soon moved to New York City. The vivacious young woman was headed for Broadway. Holman soon developed a following as a chanteuse act with her song “Body and Soul.”

Holman’s Broadway debut was in the play The Sapphire Ring in 1925. She did well on Broadway, getting good reviews in several shows. She continued to have success and made her film debut in 1947’s Dreams That Money Can Buy, but it turned out to be her only film role. Her fashion style began to gain attention, and she began to be known for wearing strapless dresses, a style she is credited with inventing.

Soon, though, she began to get more attention for her lifestyle off the stage and screen than on. She soon made headlines due to a relationship with Louisa Carpenter, an heiress to the DuPont fortune. It was the first lesbian relationship to be openly followed by the media. The sensational affair quickly changed the direction of her career. The press still clamored for her attention, but not to ask about her latest Broadway review.
